How to Get Started in Model Boats

Most boat modellers would agree that building/sailing model boats is a fun hobby.  However, as a newcomer you need to put some thought into exactly what it is you want to do.  You need to make your mind up whether you want to build your own boat (from a kit or 'scratch build') or whether you would be quite happy to purchase a boat built by someone else which is all ready to sail.  Obviously the choice is up to you but by talking to some experienced modellers it may make the decision a little easier and could save you some money.

The best way to get in touch with other boat modellers is by visiting a local model boat club.  You can find these clubs advertised in a number of places.  For instance, there are many on the web, some advertise in the boat modelling magazines and a visit to your local model shop will probably put you in touch with your local club.

Once you are there you will find that most boat modellers are a friendly bunch only too willing to impart their knowledge.  If you are looking for a boat which has already been built and is complete with radio etc. this is probably one of the best places to find one.  It will also give you the chance to see it sailing before you hand over the money.

Many people are sceptical about clubs but in this hobby it is almost essential to join a club even if it is only to ensure that you get adequate public liability insurance cover.  In addition to that it is much more fun being down at the pond with a crowd of you sailing.  Also, being a club member may get you some discounts at the local model shop.

The picture on the right shows the first boat I built back in the mid 'eighties'.  It is the White Star by Billing Boats.  Although I eventually finished it I soon found it wasn't an ideal first time boat for radio control.  Space inside was very limited and I found it  hard work installing the radio gear.  However, I had a lot of fun building it and even more fun sailing it.  Eventually I sold it, I wonder where it is now??  The model is still available from Billing Boats today.

If you are new to modelling and decide that you want to build a boat then I would recommend starting with a kit.

There are some nice kits around but before you decide on which one to buy try and find out a bit more about it.  Some kits come with almost everything included others don't.

Don't be drawn into spending a small fortune on your first boat and radio gear.  I have seen many people who take up model boating only to pack it in after six months.  Don't forget to take into account the cost of any, glue, paint and tools you may need.
Most of all have fun!
